Protection first

Life insurance is about the people who depend on your income

The purpose of life cover is simple: if your income stops, the family’s plans should not. That makes the amount and the duration of cover more important than the brand of the brochure.

CoverBima helps you work through the arithmetic — loans, future goals, current expenses and existing cover — and then explains the difference between pure protection and plans that combine insurance with savings, so you can decide what suits you.

Note: life insurance is a long-term contract. Surrendering or discontinuing a policy early can be costly, so the term and premium should be comfortable from the start.

A simple cover calculation

  1. Start with income

Multiply annual income by 10 to 15, as a working range.

  2. Add what you owe

Outstanding home, vehicle and personal loans, plus any other liabilities.

  3. Add future obligations

Children’s education and marriage, parents’ care, and major planned expenses.

  4. Subtract what already exists

Employer group life cover, savings, investments and existing policies.

  5. Check affordability and term

The premium should be sustainable for the full term of the policy.

Keep nomination current

  • Name a nominee at purchase, with the correct relationship and share
  • Update after marriage, a birth, a separation or a death in the family
  • Keep the policy document where your family can find it
  • Tell one person in the family which policies exist and who to contact
FAQ

Life Insurance FAQs

Questions we are asked about life cover and claims.

A common starting point is 10 to 15 times your annual income, adjusted for loans, future goals such as education, existing assets and cover already in place. Age, health and income determine what an insurer will accept.
Term plans give the largest protection per rupee of premium but no maturity value (unless a return-of-premium variant is chosen). Savings and investment-linked plans combine protection with a savings or investment element at a higher premium. Which is better depends on your goals, liquidity and how you prefer to separate protection from investment.
The nominee is the person who receives the benefit under the policy. Nominations should be updated after marriage, a birth or a separation - insurers pay the nominee, and this does not replace a will.
Depending on age, sum assured and declarations, insurers may ask for medical tests or additional financial documents. Accurate disclosures at this stage are what keep a future claim straightforward.
